指墨画,顾名思义就是用手指头蘸墨作画。起源于唐代张璪,成熟于清代高其佩,故被尊为中国指墨艺术之鼻祖也。其后擅用手指作画者乃扬州八怪之一的李鱓,近代的潘天寿最为著名。在当代也有部分书画大家擅用指画来表达其内心世界对艺术的感受,如张立辰、吴悦石、郭石夫等人。指墨画艺术是中国画中不可分割的一部分,凡擅指墨画者皆具备很扎实的传统笔墨功夫,对传统艺术中的用线和用墨都有很深的研究。

指墨画与毛笔画不同,在造型方面内紧外松,线条具有其独特的效果,远观晶莹而剔透,近品内敛且苍桑,神态奕奕尽在似于不似之间。指墨画贵在指法的运用和作画者的激情再现。用指头蘸墨在纸上通过转动指头,结合速度缓急心领神会,达到虚实相间,产生奔放的点、线与栩栩如生的形。指画下所产生的造型是毛笔所无法表达出来的,乃是意识形态下的,不可重复的,也是画家心灵感悟之再现。指画的表现形式有多种,如多指法、指甲法、掌法、臂法,异有用脚肢作画者,等等都不足为奇,指画最妙处是与毛笔相结合,在运墨适当的时机,用清水或颜色加以润化,求自然天成,所得墨之神韵,使塑造的形象更加丰富生动。

指画的历史久远,《历代名画记》就记载了“以手摸绢素”“以头髻取墨”的故事。而指画创作,指头蓄墨量小,不易写长线,难于精细,画面容易支离琐碎,作画难度颇高,因而指画大家屈指可数。到了当代国画巨匠潘天寿这里,指画才得到了极高的美学认可。他把指头画和文人画相结合,以苍古雄浑的气韵、厚重隽永的意境、丰富高超的技巧,将别人认为的雕虫小技变成了一个具有宏大气象的表现方法,使指画成为中国画中非常有特点、非常优秀的一类画法。
